West Nile Virus
EEE is a viral disease transmitted to humans and horses by mosquito bites. The recent rains in those areas were favorable to the proliferation of the mosquito population. People are encouraged to avoid exposure to mosquitoes. Preventive measures include eliminating mosquito breeding sites (stagnant water in ponds, birdbaths, old tires, flower pots, etc...), use mosquito repellents, wear long sleeve-shirts and pants shoes and socks if outdoors when mosquitoes are present, and avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn. Horse owners are encouraged to vaccinate their animals against EEE, and to limit the exposure to mosquito bites by keeping horses stalled at dusk and dawn, using fans in the stalls whenever possible, and avoid proximity to ponds and stagnant water. Horses presenting signs of neurological disease should be assessed by a veterinarian and suspicious cases for EEE should be reported to the DOACS: 1-877-815-0034.
